Larry
Blair, "The Living Legend" in action in the
2SM/CocaCola Surfabout
No one will ever
forget Larry
Blair's amazing nine second tube ride in perfect North Steyne
lefts to win the 1978 final of the 2SM/Coca Cola Surfabout (now
the Coke Classic) over Wayne Lynch. Its arguably the best wave
and the most still-talked-about "tube" ever to be
ridden in Australia. It's been said if Wayne Lynch was like Mick
Jagger, Larry Blair was like Johnny Rotten!
Young grommets of today may have to look through history pages to see Larry Blair's impact on surfing, but ask any pro surfer their thoughts and you will be hit with words like "legend" and "tube master".
Last year (1996) he was invited to surf before the final of the Pipeline Master in Hawaii. Billed as the "Legends of the Pipeline" he was the only Australian invitee.
TRACKS FACT -Larry Takes the TV Ratings. The 1978 Surfabout, in which Larry Blair scored his epic nine second barrel to beat Wayne Lynch in the final, was covered in a series of shows by Channel 9 who were awarded with a Logie for Best Sports Documentary of the Year. |

But it is his work out of the water that has always been groundbreaking in the world of surfing. Larry was the first to cross over into commercialism, filming television advertisements for companys such as CocaCola, Amco Jeans and BigM Milk.
